July 2025 Updates and Notices

Dear subscribers

Welcome to the July Newsletter!

At InThinking, we are delighted to be able to have the first batch of Quizlets now embedded for the new syllabus (first teaching 2025). Students can choose their preferred Quiz format from the drop down menu (Flashcards, Match, Learn, Test, and/or Spell).

Examples of Quizlets available for the new syllabus include:

  • Topic 1.1.1 (Finite resources and infinite wants) here.
  • Topic 1.1.3 (Economic goods & free goods) here.
  • Topic 1.2.1 (Factors of production and their rewards) here.
  • Topic 2.1.1 (How markets work) here.

Each Quizlet includes the usual options to engage students - Flashcards, Match, Learn, Test (including MCQ option for Paper 1 practice), and Spell. There are many more Quizlets are on their way for the new syllabus!

Other updates

Other recent updates to the website include:

  • Real-world example of highly price inelastic demand with BBC News reporting that school fees in England increased by 22.6% (20% VAT plus 2.6% fee adjustment), resulting in 11 009 students leaving the private sector. See if your students are able to calculate the value of PED from the given data here.
  • Interpreting economic data from charts is an important examination skill for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. With reference to the CPI data for France below, see if your students are able to avoid the common examination mistake outlined here.
  • Additional Paper 1 questions have been added to the website, including this one based on a recent exam question that many students found particularly challenging:
  • For those who have not yet discovered Tri-dominoes, this is a great lesson activity to get students out of their seats and interact with others to revise key terms from the syllabus. The latest Tri-dominoes added to the website is for Unit 2, which can be found here.
InThinking and Student Access

Content on the website now exceeds 530 000 words. To put this into context, the 320-page Cambridge-endorsed IGCSE Economics textbook (3rd edition), published by Hachette Learning, contains approximately 150 500 words. In June 2025, we reached new milestones with a record number of teachers (125) and students (787) using InThinking IGCSE Economics.

Did you know that your InThinking IGCSE Economics students can have completely free access to the website once you have activated Student Access? You can also register other teachers in your school to gain access to the website, which is updated every week, 52 weeks a year. The annual subscription therefore represents extremely good value for money and will save you hundreds of hours of planning.

There are several key functions to Student Access:

  • Students have access to all notes related to the contents of the course. Essentially, they can use the website as a comprehensive e-textbook for the entire course.
  • It allows students to directly access most, but not all, pages (such as examination papers and mark schemes, as well as other teacher support materials).
  • It enables teachers to create tasks for their students (refer to the Smart Quizzes section of the website).
  • It helps to consolidate student learning and facilitates revision (such as the Paper 1 MCQ tasks, which all come with answers that have explanations).
  • It allows teachers to monitor the progress of their students using the grade book.

To get started, go to the Student Access tab in the top left corner of the home page.

InThinking Authors' Summit 2025

Last week, InThinking site authors, the tech team, and InThinking Central met up for an energising weekend in beautiful Sitges, Spain 🇪🇸 where we shared ideas, challenged what we (think we) know, and reimagined what great teaching and learning looks like.

The summit involved over 50 passionate educators who explored best practices in the classroom, the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, and strategic ways forward to support teachers and students. A recurring theme throughout was the importance of nurturing critical thinking - not just in our students, but in ourselves as educators.

I left Sitges with plenty of ideas for the InThinking IGCSE Economics website. There are certainly lots of exciting developments to look forward to in the new academic year!

Social media engagement

At the time of writing, there are 295 teachers in our InThinking IGCSE Economics WhatsApp group, with members asking questions and sharing ideas and resources on a regular basis. What we ask for is that all members check their WhatsApp privacy settings to ensure their full name and a suitable profile picture are on display - this is simply so that we all know who we are communicating with. We also have 415 teachers in our Facebook group. Feel free to join these groups as we transition to teaching the new IGCSE Economics syllabus in a couple of months from now.

Finally, we know at InThinking that the strength and growth of the community of teachers using our sites rely on word of mouth. If you are enjoying the website, please share your insights through your own social networks. We are certainly keen on hearing from you, guiding the site's future developments. Testimonials for the InThinking IGCSE Economics website can be found here.

In addition to IGCSE Economics, there are existing InThinking IGCSE websites for:

  • Geography - authored by Paul Christmas

  • History - authored by Jo Thomas and Keely Rogers

  • Business - authored by Mark Johnson.

These site authors are all outstanding educators and experts in their respective fields. Please do share the details with your colleagues if your school offers any of these IGCSE subjects.

Wishing you all the best for the month ahead and a great summer holiday.

Paul Hoang
