The syllabus at a glance

The Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455) syllabus at a glance

The study of economics focuses on how scarce resources are organised in a world that faces many challenging economic and environmental issues. The Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455) course provides students with the opportunity to:

  • learn about the basic economic concepts

  • explain, analyse, and evaluate economic issues

  • organise, present, and communicate ideas clearly.

The Cambridge IGCSE syllabus is based on students having approximately 130 guided learning hours during the course -but this is for guidance only. The context and needs of different schools will also need to be considered.

The importance of ceteris paribus

"Ceteris paribus" is the Latin phrase for "all other things being equal". This is vital to the study of Economics as it enables us to isolate the impact of specific variables in different models and hypotheses, such as the theories of demand and supply. By assuming other factors remain constant, economists can analyse the relationship between cause and effect more accurately, such as the impact of price changes on the demand for a particular goods or service. Without ceteris paribus, untangling and understanding the complexities of economic variables would be extremely challenging and likely to hinder our ability to comprehend the dynamic nature of the subject.

Please see below a set of posters / summary infographics which make for great wall posters on the key aspects of the Cambridge syllabus. These poster have been created by David Smith, who teaches at Nexus International School in Malaysia.

Many thanks for creating and sharing these with the InThinking IGCSE Economics community, David!
