5. City Case Study - Brussels
This page provides a detailed case study of urban problems that stem from patterns of urban change. It focuses on the city of Brussels and its well documented social problems in its inner city as well as the continued pressures seen on the Rural Urban Fringe (RUF)

2. Complete the fill in the gap activity below.
- What patterns can you identify on the map?
- Whose model is it similar to ?
- What issues can you identify?
Study the gallery of graphs and identify how each figure supports or questions the neighbourhood map above ( activity 1).
- Write down one sentence for each figure

Read the section in the E-textbook titled 'Redevelopment of the Brussels Canal Zone'. Then answer the following questions:
- Where is Molenbeek located?
- What has caused the decline of the inner city in Brussels?
- What specific problems do the North African community face?
Print out the slides and place them around the room to create a learning walk of Brussels. Provide the students with an A3 sheet of the map
Take a 'Learning Walk', in our classroom to record how Brussels is investing in its inner city.
Record the changes on your A3 sheet. An example has been completed for you.
- Try to refer to social, economic and environmental impacts if you see them, but not every project will have all three
- Try to identify problems or shortfalls of the projects

Brussels' Suburban Story & Conflicts on the RUF
You teacher will read out the following Suburban story twice.
While they read it out, you can only summarise with images, numbers or single words.
Once complete try to re-tell the story to a partner, as you do, add more detail to your notes.
Extra optional Conflict activity
You should fill in the conflict table, as your teacher shows you the conflict images on the PowerPoint slides.
For a named urban area, describe the conflicts that have developed because of a change in land use.
