Armistice Day
Armistice Day is a significant day in the school calender; it gives us the opportunity to remember the lives lost and sacrifices made in previous wars; as well as remembering the conflicts that are currently ongoing. It also gives history students the chance to share their knowledge of this topic with the rest of the school via assemblies and/or displays.
The First World War is starting point for discussing the significance of this day and there are many different themes that can be explored in discussing this war with students. This PPT gives some suggestions of content and video clips that could be used in an Assembly:

2024 is also a key year for remembering momentous battles of the Second World War:
The British Legion site has focused on the Battles of Kohima and Imphal for 2024 Remembrance:
Battles of Kohima and Imphal (The Royal British Legion)
Find out how the British, Indian, Gurkha, and African troops along with local tribes, changed the direction of the war in SE Asia.
The BBC site also has Assembly resources that can be used to discuss both the First World War and Second World War:
Armistice Day also gives the chance to talk about ongoing conflicts - Ukraine and Gaza being the most prominent at the moment - and to remember soldiers and civilians who have died, been injured, or are still caught up in these wars.
This excellent CFR site shows where conflicts are ongoing and provides background and analysis on each one:
Site update
We have now finished writing content and activities for Core Option A. As we have mentioned before, this is a great course (which we have both taught) for broadening out student knowledge beyond 20th Century topics - particularly for those students who then go on to do mainly 20th Century history for IB or A level. It is also more thematic (rather than chronological) in approach covering a range of issues and continents - civil War in America, liberalism and nationalism in Europe, imperialism in Asia and Africa. The themes of nationalism and imperialism in Europe come together in the final topic on the causes of the First World War.
We will be adding exam question tasks for Core Option A in the next couple of months.
