September 2024 Updates and Notices
Welcome to the September 2024 newsletter!
I hope you're now have managed to enjoy a restful summer vacation with friends and family.
If you're looking for a fun, engaging, and purposeful activity to start the new academic year with your IGCSE Economics students, then you can't really beat the good old Arctic Island Survival Game - it's been around since 1977! Details of how to play this game, along with an accompanying Google Slides presentation and teacher notes can be found here.
Have fun!
Following the updates and notices in August, additional "Worked examples" have been added to the website, such as:
Unit 2.10.1 (Definition of market failure) here.
Unit 3.3.4 (Division of labour/specialisation) here.
Unit 4.6.1 (Definition of economic growth) here.
Unit 4.6.2 (Measurements of economic growth) here, with worked examples for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions.
Unit 4.6.5 (Consequences of economic growth) here.
Unit 4.6.6 (Policies to promote economic growth) here, with worked examples for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions.
Other additions to the website during the past month include:
A new 8-mark question has been added to the other exam practice questions for Unit 2.10.3 (Consequences of market failure) here. This question is based on the social costs and benefits of China's Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower plant.
A new interactive true or false quiz for Unit 3.4 (Mergers) has been added here.
Students often make mistakes when calculating the rate of inflation, covered in Unit 4.8.2. Additional exam practice questions plus a top tip on common mistakes have been added here.
There are Paper 2 exam practice questions for Unit 5.4.1 (Differences in economic development between countries) added here. There are accompanying mark schemes to support teachers and students.
Content on the website now exceeds 480,000 words, including more than 370 interactive quizzes, revision flash cards covering the entirety of the syllabus, and exam practice questions and mark schemes for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. To put this into context, the 320-page Cambridge-endorsed IGCSE Economics textbook published by Hodder Education contains approximately 150,400 words. Resources are continually added to InThinking IGCSE Economics on a weekly basis, 52 weeks a year, as highlighted above.
Please note that your IGCSE Economics students can have completely free access to the website once you have activated Student Access. You can also register other teachers in your school to gain access to the website, which is updated every week, 52 weeks a year. The annual subscription therefore represents extremely good value for money and will save you hundreds of hours of planning:
Currency | Annual | Per week | Per day |
USD ($) | 270 | 5.19 | 0.74 |
EUR (€) | 220 | 4.23 | 0.60 |
GBP (£) | 210 | 4.04 | 0.58 |
Student Access
Teachers can activate Student Access to give their learners free access to the website. There are several key functions to this:
Student have access to all notes related to the contents of the course. Essentially, they can use the website as a e-textbook for the entire course.
It allows students to directly access most, but not all, pages (such as examination papers and mark schemes, as well as other teacher support materials).
It enables teachers to create tasks for their students (refer to the Smart Quizzes section of the website).
It helps to consolidate student learning and facilitates revision (such as the Paper 1 MCQ tasks, which all come with answers that have explanations).
It allows teachers to monitor the progress of their students using the grade book.
To get started, go to the Student Access tab in the top left corner of the home page.
I do hope that you are enjoying the website and that you and your students are making full use of the resources. At the time of writing, we have more than 80 teachers from all continents using InThinking IGCSE Economics. There are also more than 700 registered students using the website. Please remember that you can activate Student Access to enable all of your student to use the resources on InThinking free of charge.
To stay up to date with site developments and professional discussions about the IGCSE Economics course, teachers are welcome to join our Facebook and WhatsApp support groups:
Finally, we know at InThinking that the strength and growth of the community of teachers using our sites rely on word of mouth. If you are enjoying the website, please share your insights through your own social networks. We are certainly keen on hearing from you, guiding the site's future developments. Testimonials for the website can be found here.
In addition to Economics, there are existing InThinking IGCSE websites for Geography and History. There are more subjects in the pipeline as well.
