A rather unusual development occurred in the 1920s in America; the government decided to ban alcohol. This was known as Prohibition and came about due to the pressure from temperance movements, who were mainly religious groups, concerned about the effect that alcohol was having on families and the overall morality of the country.However, as you will see, it was overall a failure and Prohibition was ended in 1933.
