Japan was totally militarily defeated in August 1945 and surrendered ‘unconditionally’. The Americans occupied Japan until a treaty was finally signed in 1952. The US had total control over Japan until this was signed, and so were not limited by the conditions of an armistice or a treaty that had been signed quickly at the end of the war. The Americans were the sole occupiers of Japan and so did not have to compromise...
